Movies That Deserved A Sequel
Time and time again we get those great movies that could be turned into a potential series only to be never heard of again. I can name about 50 movies off the top of my head that deserved a sequel but didn’t get it because of box office numbers or directors just abanding the idea completely (how disrespectful!). Here’s a quick rundown of some movies that need to be brought back on the big screen. Also if you haven’t seen these yet please do yourself a favor and check them out.
Scott Pilgrim vs the World
Scott Pilgrim vs the World was about the main character Scott who fighting his love interest Fiona’s seven evil exes in order to be with her. This movie is exactly the way it sounds, it’s a comedy action movie based on a comic book (of course). Scott Pilgrim is one of my favorite movies, one that I appreciated a lot when I got older. Did I feel related to Scott? Yes, and that’s triggering. I love this movie so much I went and bought five copies on DVD at Walmart (they were only $3.50).
SPOILER At the end of the movie Scott & Fiona walk off into the darkness showing that they are going to continue with their relationship and then you get nothing else after that. The movie is straight entertainment and I believe there isn’t one dry scene in it; even the non-action scenes. I’ve always thought that this movie deserved a sequel, I would like for the original actors to return, but if they reboot it and make it a series I’m fine with that too. At this point, this franchise should be two to three movies in and that will always bother me.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Even though I truly hate this movie with all my heart, it would have been nice to see how Peter Parker recouped after the death of Gwen Stacey knowing that he has to continue life as Spider-Man. Sony had plans to do a third and fourth movie along with a Sinister 6 movie with all the franchise’s villains, but behind, the scenes antics ruined everything for everybody.
Now that we have Tom Holland and Spider-Man being in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I can live without The Amazing Spider-Man 3. All in all, the third film could have closed out everything from this series before they decided to make that move to Disney. When you just up and leave the way that this franchise did it leaves a bad taste in the fans mouths for future projects you may be working on, even if it’s not your fault.
District 9
District 9 was the most confusing yet still amazing movie I’ve ever seen, It’s about aliens being on earth and “living” within South Africa. The main character Wikus van de Merwe gets in contact with alien “fluid” and throughout the movie, he transforms into one of the aliens. The movie came out in 2009 so I didn’t fully understand it until I got a little older. I can say that it is a true sci-fi film from start to finish.
There were plans for a sequel called District 10, but the director, Neill Blomkamp, said in an interview with IGN back in June 2013 “I really want to make a District 9 sequel. I genuinely do. The problem is I have a bunch of ideas and stuff that I want to make. I’m relatively new to this – I’m about to make my third film, and now the pattern that I’m starting to realize is very true is that you lock yourself into a film beyond the film you’re currently working on. But it just doesn’t work for me.” Being that it’s now 2018, I hope that we get something sooner than later.
Hancock
One of the most unorthodox superhero movies ever, Hancock should have had a sequel the year after it came out. Hancock is one of my favorite WIll Smith movies and #10 on my list of the top 10 superhero movies (article coming soon). Being that it starred Will Smith, you already know that the movie showed out at the box office. The budget for the movie was $150 Million, and it made $624 million. There’s no way it shouldn’t have had a sequel greenlit. This franchise could have sparked two or three more movies, there definitely was a storyline there for it.
Being that the movie came out ten years ago, and Will Smith is only 49 years old; depending on how he feels Smith could suit up for the role one last time and have it go out with a bang. A Lot of the actors who were in the movie when it came out are now in their late 40’s - early 50’s so you have to base all of that on who can fulfill those more physical roles. All in all, we deserve a sequel, we been deserved a sequel.
Wanted
There are two reasons why everyone knows this movie. 1. Because of the curved bullet scenes. 2. Because Angelina Jolie got out the healing pool and was ass-naked fulfilling a lot of fantasies at the time. I did not understand Wanted until I got older and really got into watching movies that had a lot of dialogue in them. Now they’re my favorite type of movies.
SPOILER In the second to last scene where Fox (Angelina Jolie) curves a bullet around the room killing (everyone including herself) beside Wesley; it left a big “what’s next” for the audience. Usually you think because everyone dies in the movie that there’s no point in a sequel, but because of the assassin society was a huge foundation, you’d think more stories would have come out of it. All in all, it’s an amazing movie that deserves to be brought back to the big screen. Even though it’s been ten years I think they could still pull it off.
