We live in a generation now in which longer length musical projects and other multimedia are becoming less and less digested largely due to the instant gratification culture and quicker technology of our time. This has influenced the psychology of receiving content quicker and having it passed to us and processed through us like fast food. There is so much easily accessible music today more than any other period in time due to the streamlined digitization process and technology which allows individuals to create their own music and master it as quickly as possible. However, this does not always equate to greatness as showcased by my colleague’s critique of Migos’ Culture II earlier in 2018. We have seen with Jay-Z’s 4:44 and even G.O.O.D Music’s music catalog this summer that even mainstream artists have adapted this shorter length project model to get across quality rather than quantity.
Continuing this trend is 3SIDE member Bass Monkei with his EP Random. Although it was released over a month ago, the quality, production meticulousness and formulas for a great instrumental EP (not just some run-of the-mill beat tape) are all present. For anyone that’s in tune with great vibes, fantastic instrumentation to study to or anything else, Bass Monkei provides one of the best instrumental solo projects of the year. Each and every track presents its versatility with four tracks that each have incredible yet unique quality, layers and depth. 3SIDE strikes once again with quality content as Bass Monkei makes their mark as an essential part of the dynamic crew and an individual powerhouse.
