Let’s go back in time for a second. It’s January 1, 2018 and you’re in your room drafting up your complete list of short-term and long-term goals you plan to accomplish this year. It’s a brand new start and you have 365 days of a clean slate to become a brand-new you - focused, driven, and full of determination. That business you’ve been trying to start up or that job/ internship you’ve been fighting to snag is on your list of goals to reach. You’re feeling unstoppable and like nothing can get in your way. However, life happened and your path became skewed. Some days went by, then a few weeks, and before you know it six months have gone by and you’re not quite where you pictured yourself at.
“I’ve done a lot of work to get where I’m at, but I have to keep working.” -Wiz Khalifa
We all have this ideal image of where we see ourselves in life, but as time goes on and life takes over that picture becomes blurred. Life is an unpredictable thing that has a lot of twists and turns and bumps in the road, but it’s our job to fight through those obstacles no matter what gets thrown our way. Writing down your main goals for the year is a great way to stay engrossed in your purpose, but you still may find yourself getting sidetracked. The best way to make sure you’re maintaining your mental health is to promote a secure sense of self-confidence to the point where your losses won’t deter you from the goal. Being aggressive on your path to success is the only way to ensure you’re doing everything possible to achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself.
Whether you’re the type of person to shy away from making courageous decisions or someone who is an overachiever that gets hard on themselves when they fall short of their own expectations, it’s okay to take a step back sometimes and put your life in perspective. As someone who has a lot of eyes on them at all times and heavy expectations placed upon them, I strive to outdo myself in everything I do; however, sometimes that results in crushed feelings and disappointment.
Keep ya head up, ooh, child, things are gonna get easier. - Tupac, “Keep Ya Head Up”
Setting goals for yourself shouldn’t be a nearly impossible standard to meet. Those goals should be your guide, but it’s okay to go off course sometimes. As long as you’re staying active and productive you should feel proud to be in a better place than you were last year. Every year should be motivation to reach a place of elevation in your life whether it be mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, or professionally.
So how do you find the motivation to push forward despite feeling like you’re slowing down? Simple - you constantly have to practice healthy habits to get back into the swing of things. Things like getting writer’s block or feeling stagnant in your life are natural occurrences, but the good news is they don’t last always. Changing your perspective on life is a great way to start appreciating the things you have achieved rather than focusing on what you have yet to fulfill. Take this time to re-evaluate where you were and where you are now. Decide what else you need to do in order to get back on track and finish off the rest of the year strong. Remember it’s a race not a marathon so pace yourself and be patient on the blessings you’re waiting for because when they do come around the reward will be so much sweeter.
