The phrase, “You can’t judge a book by its cover,” becomes the most apparent idiom one can think of when engaging in a reading of F*ck Whales by Maddox.
The entire book isn’t solely about how Whales suck and the reasons as to why, but a compilation of satirical (albeit sagacious) short essays about things in society we uphold as untouchable markers of culture, prestige, and truth. While Maddox’s satirical writing definitely comes off as intentionally offensive satire and harsh wording (all not to be taken seriously in its degree), his exceptional style presents salient, objective points that teach the reader new methods of critical analysis and objectivity on thought barriers imposed on them by societal groupthink. His words can also help emotionally/mentally comfort those feeling alienated for not indulging in the various cultural obligations and norms.
Take for example the first few excerpts from the chapter, “F*ck Families”:
“Families are collections of strangers. You have nothing in common with your parents and siblings other than a fraction of your genetic code. Who gives a shit? Being that we share 99.9 percent of our DNA with every other person on Earth, saying that you’re related to any one person is statistically equivalent to saying you’re related to every other human being.
Hell, we share 96 percent of our genetic code with a chimpanzee and 60 percent with a banana, but I don’t see anyone expecting me to buy expensive plane tickets to visit a passive-aggressive plantain over the holidays.
…
In the name of family, people tend to suffer through incredible levels of toxic behavior. Because of some antiquated notion of familial or tribal bond, family members are often expected to stick together despite all kinds of physical, emotional and verbal abuse. No thanks.
…
Rather than hire hospice workers, these old people decide to create then. Their retirement plan amounts to raising a staff of indentured servants. That’s not only selfish and inefficient, it’s downright creepy.”
For those into The Office, SNL, Comedy Central Stand Up Specials, Sway’s comedy bits on the Working Title Podcast, and satirically savage comedy, F*ck Whales is the perfect comedic/intellectual fusion for you on subjects on just about every aspect of our society’s culture.
