Living in a major American city has many benefits. One of which is the cultural diversity people bring. It’s this diversity that makes it possible for anyone to enjoy a cultural experience without having to travel. Here are some ways you can learn about and enjoy aspects of a different culture without having to travel.
Restaurants
Restaurants provide a good introduction to a culture’s cuisine, eating customs and language. Food can transcend barriers; so, if you are interested in a specific culture and cannot afford to visit that country, go to a restaurant for that cultural experience. You could learn how to eat with a fork and spoon, chop sticks, or even your hands. You can even ask an employee about any events happening nearby involving that culture.
Hostels
Hostels, more often than hotels, are a space where people are forced to interact because of the closeness in the living arrangement. They are also cheaper than hotels. So, book a weekend stay at a hostel in your city and be open to living with and meeting people from different cultures. You can learn more about the culture of where people are from and learn about the cultures of the places they have visited. If you want to travel in the future, this experience is a plus because you will likely get tips on travel and see that hostels are not as horrible as people think.
Couchsurfing
Like hostels, Couchsurfing allows diverse groups of people to interact. You can use Couchsurfing to host travelers or sign up for different cultural experiences in your city. There are also several meet-ups that would allow you to mingle with foreigners and learn more about different cultures.
Meetup
With Meetup’s varied groups, you can meet people with similar interests to yours. Whether you are interested in the food, language, or dances of a culture, you’re guaranteed to meet people that share those interests. Meetup is like Couchsurfing in that there are events and groups catered to specific interests; it is, however, slightly less intimidating because Meetup is not geared towards travelers.
Embassy Events
This option is great for those who live in Washington, DC, New York, and other cities with embassies. You can search on embassy websites or Meetup for specific cultural events and make connections.
