To celebrate the many talented artists and creatives in Baltimore, The Demo Tape is spotlighting a new person each week for the “Charm City Come Up.” This week, we take a closer look at rapper La’ Matic.
La’ Matic is no stranger to TDT. He earned Best New Artist honors at the 2018 Tapey Awards, following the release of his 90’s Juvie mixtape. The tape featured several bass-thumping bangers, including “I Got Hoes,” “Birthday Tunes” and the Soduh-assisted “Baltimore Playaz Anthem.”
While 90’s Juvie was a strong introduction, La’ Matic was just scratching the surface with that one. In fact, he’s coming off the biggest year of his career so far. In 2018, he released 4eva, which went on to win Album of the Year and Best Rap Album at the Tapeys last month. 4eva was a complete showing by La’ Matic, who has displayed a diverse skill set, with tracks like “Atlanta,” “If I Die Today,” and “Dear God.” He linked up with fellow Baltimore rapper Chris Cassius for the silky smooth “Mansionz,” which also earned a Tapey nomination. The project’s lead single, “Wicked Love,” was one of the better singles to come out of Baltimore in the past year as well.
With each project that he releases, La’ Matic shows more and more growth. He recently dropped his latest project, Sauce Sinatra and it’s enjoyed a good reception up to this point. “Smoother” is a fan favorite, as it gets us ready for when the weather breaks. Top to bottom, you’ll find plenty of gems on Sauce Sinatra, from “Bruce Wayne” to “Made It Out.”
Although La’ Matic hasn’t received the same level of attention as some of the bigger names in the city, the music that he’s put out makes a fool out of those sleeping on him. He’s one of the most underrated talents in Baltimore, but it’s only a matter of time before the entire city knows his name.
