This time two summers ago, Baltimore City was still mourning the death of rapper Lor Scoota. He was shot and killed leaving a charity basketball game in June of 2016, promoting peace and an end to violence in his hometown. Two years later, the city still remembers him him and the legacy he left behind not only as a phenomenal artist, but an inspiration and a hero to the people he left behind.
You can’t talk Baltimore music history without at least the mention of Lor Scoota. “Bird Flu” is forever a hometown classic, “Norma Jeans” is a Baltimore Street essential, and the only “Panda” we play here is the one by Scoota himself. While we’re here, Still In the Trenches 3 is still no skips all the way through, too.
Listening to Lor Scoota’s discography is a bittersweet experience for me personally. One on hand, I get so much enjoyment out of playing songs like “My 40” and “Young Bull” at extremely ignorant levels on the AUX. On the other hand, I can’t help but become frustrated with the thought of the heights he would have been able to reach as he was just at the beginning of what appeared to be a promising career.
Today though, for even just a second, we won’t focus on the later and celebrate the music he gave us while he was here with us. Enjoy this playlist below of 50 essential Lor Scoota cuts, from the Still In The Trenches series to loose singles and freestyles like “Perks Calling” and “They Say That I’m Crazy.”
