The Buffalo Bills are an interesting team heading into the season. After making the playoffs last season they now have a lot of holes throughout their team and a potential franchise quarterback in waiting. In Sean McDermott’s second season as head coach we see parallels to the Carolina Panthers teams that he coordinated for. Strong armed mobile quarterback? Check. Talented middle linebacker? Check. Young stud at cornerback? Check. Oh yeah Kelvin Benjamin is here too.
1st Down: Who starts at quarterback?
The Bills bounced longtime starter Tyrod Taylor last season in favor of the unknown. The only player we’ve seen throw a pass for the Bills out of this group is Nathan Peterman and we’re all better off forgetting that ever happened. Longtime Bengals’ backup AJ McCarron finally gets his shot at a starting job after sitting behind Andy Dalton for four years while first round draft pick Josh Allen waits in the wings. Whoever starts will be behind an odd ensued line missing two of last year’s starters (Richie Incognito & Eric Wood) and flanked by skill positions with multiple question marks.
2nd Down: Who starts across from Kelvin Benjamin?
There’s no doubt who sits atop the receiver depth chart in Buffalo with Kelvin Benjamin in town. The former first rounder was acquired mid-season via trade and will have every opportunity to prove the Bills’ front office right in dealing for him. After Benjamin, the Bills are short on talent. To this point the Bills have yet to kick the tires on a big name veteran receiver (salute Dez Bryant), choosing instead to continue developing Zay Jones and bringing in former Jet Jeremy Kerley. With players like Bryant, Jeremy Maclin and Eric Decker still available - will one of these names find their way to Buffalo?
3rd Down: Can their secondary repeat last year’s efforts?
Buffalo’s biggest strength last year was their secondary. Rookie Tre’Davious White was a stud, grading out as elite from Pro Football Focus. Safety Micah Hyde played well enough to earn Pro Bowl honors last season while Jordan Poyer performed admirably beside him. If Vontae Davis can return to his pre-injury form, the Buffalo secondary should once again be one of the best in the league. The Bills secondary playing at a high level should also elevate rookie Tremaine Edmunds in the middle of the defense by giving him a security blanket.
4th Down: How will LeSean McCoy’s drama play out?
On the field LeSean McCoy is the best player the Bills have. The star runningback’s offseason however has been headline worthy with allegations of domestic violence during a home invasion coming to light. Far and away Buffalo’s most dynamic player, if McCoy is forced to miss anytime this season the Bills are in trouble. While Chris Ivory has shown that he can be productive in the past there’s only one LeSean McCoy.
