NFL Week in Review: Week 7
AFC West shootout in Oakland, Cam Newton struggling and so much more from Week 7.
We are nearing the halfway point of the 2017-18 NFL season and things are really starting to heat up. So far the season has been marred by injuries, but Week 7 brought us some exciting action. There were some interesting takeaways from Week 7, but as we’ve learned, anything can happen on any given Sunday. Here are some highlights from Week 7 in the NFL.
Game of the Week: Kansas City Chiefs at Oakland Raiders
I don’t think this comes as much of a shock, as the two AFC West rivals gave us a treat on Thursday Night Football, which had been known for its lack of entertaining games. The two teams engaged in an exciting shootout, trading blows like a chess match. The Raiders trailed 30-21 heading into the fourth quarter, but scored 10 unanswered points in the final period, to hand the Chiefs their second straight loss.
Stock Up, Stock Down:
Stock Up – Bears defense. I don’t know what has gotten into this Chicago Bears defense, but I’m loving it. Over the past couple games, they have forced six turnovers, resulting in three touchdowns. The pass rush has been very effective as well. They sacked Cam Newton five times and hit him on countless other occasions.
Stock Down – Ravens offense. The Baltimore Ravens are on their second two-game losing streak this season and a big part of their struggles has come on the offensive end. This is a team that battered, with significant injuries on the offensive line and in the receiving corps. Not to mention, Joe Flacco has played like garbage.
Stock Up – New Orleans Saints. The Saints just pulled off an enormous win over the Packers in Lambeau. Sure, Green Bay is without A-Rod, but this is still a monumental victory for New Orleans, as they now sit atop the NFC South standings. Their defense is much improved and it shows.
Stock Down – Carolina Panthers. The team the Saints overtook in the NFC South? The Carolina Panthers. They are reeling in a bad way right now, having dropped their last two contests. Their running game is non-existent and Newton has failed to be anywhere near his former MVP level.
Fantasy Advice for Week 8:
Players to Add – WR JuJu Smith-Schuster (Steelers), RB Rex Burkhead (Patriots), QB Matt Moore (Dolphins), RB T.J. Yeldon (Jaguars), RB Latavius Murray (Vikings)
Players to Drop – WR Randall Cobb (Packers), RB Jonathan Stewart (Panthers), WR Martavis Bryant (Steelers), RB Mike Gillislee (Patriots), RB Theo Riddick (Lions)
Players of the Week:
Offense – WR Amari Cooper, Raiders. There had been a missing persons report filed on Cooper heading into Week 7. But, we finally found him due to a monster performance on Thursday night. Cooper hauled in 11 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns en route to a narrow victory over the Chiefs.
Defense – S Eddie Jackson, Bears. Week 7’s tilt with the Panthers was a breakout game of sorts for Jackson. The Alabama product recorded not one, but two defensive touchdowns — a 75-yard fumble recovery and a 75-yard interception return. He also tacked on four tackles.
