Against The Grain is not just a rap group. The Baltimore-based group consists of Eazy, Juice, Trippy, and their producer, Suplex. The group says their name came to be one day sitting in Eazy’s room. “Against The Grain,” initially set to be the name of their debut mixtape, eventually stuck as the group name. “We felt like that would stick,” said Juice; “We always try to be not like the stand out niggas; always in the limelight, but just not following the status quo.”
If it wasn’t for rap, Eazy says he knows he would still be a student at Frostburg University aspiring to own his own business being an entrepreneur investing in himself and other black owned businesses. Eazy has been at rapping since his elementary days at the lunch table where he was known as “Eazy Breezy.” Growing up, he says he had books he would write his raps in and was also a member of rap groups. However, it wasn’t until high school when he started to take his craft more seriously. While students at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, Juice and Eazy created their first mixtape titled “Enough Said.” Having a friend who had access to the studio in the school, they would skip lunch and go record.
Growing up, Juice always had a niche for writing. Since he fell in love with music he decided to incorporate his writing abilities with the art of making music. Juice said he’s able to relate best to Fabolous’ music.”His rap style is soulful it speak to you,” says Juice. “Ain’t no fabrication in his music, you can believe what he say[s]. He’s himself and that’s how I portray myself my raps, and that’s how ATG is; we are ourselves.”
For Eazy, managing school and music can be difficult. By being a member of fraternity Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated, if it’s not school or his organization, it’s the studio. “When you’re in the studio, it’s not like work. It’s a relief, like something you been looking forward to all day,” says Juice.
As artists, one of their main goals is to keep making progress towards the next level of success. The group has performed recently at Frostburg University as well photographer/videographer T. Brown‘s Pineapple Express, a performance showcase and open mic series dedicated to up and coming artist from Maryland.
Upcoming for Against The Grain is Eazy and Trippy’s project titled “Super Beam Bros.” Eazy and Juice also have a forthcoming project as well. Alongside an Against The Grain group project, there is also a collaboration mixtape with “SleaZe Mob;” a rap group that attends Frostburg University.
