My Winners for Tonight’s BET Hip-Hop Awards

The 10th annual BET Hip-Hop Awards will air tonight at 8P/7C. Coming from a personal standpoint, I enjoy the BET Hip-Hop Awards more than than BET Awards because of the focus on Hip-Hop and the many memorable cyphers we’ve witnessed over the years. With that being said, here are my picks to win tonight’s awards:

Best Lyricist of the Year

Nominees: J.Cole, Drake, Big Sean, Nicki Minaj, and Kendrick Lamar

My Winner: Kendrick Lamar

All of these artists are great in their own right, but this one has to go to Kendrick here. Anyone who has heard “To Pimp a Butterfly” has heard how talented of an artist Kendrick Lamar is. This is to take nothing away from guys like J. Cole and Drake, but Kendrick is on a untouchable level right now.

MVP of the Year

Nominees: J.Cole, Drake, Big Sean, Future, Nicki Minaj

Winner: Future

I didn’t even think twice about this one, to be honest. Just go look at the nominees for mixtape of the year. Future has dominated 2015. Don’t let that Drake and Meek Mill beef distract you and tell you otherwise.

Best Track of the Year

Nominees: “Commas” by Future, “Alright” by Kendrick Lamar, “I Don’t Fuck With You” by Big Sean, “Blessings” by Big Sean, and “Trap Queen” by Fetty Wap

Winner: “Alright” by Kendrick Lamar

When I heard “To Pimp a Butterfly” this was instantly one of my favorite songs off the album. If you haven’t watched the video as well, I would highly recommend sparing 7 minutes of your day to do so.

The Heavyweights of Baltimore Rap

Baltimore has never had a solid group of rappers to represent the city.

Baltimore City is known for its crabs, sports teams, and well… violence and drugs. Other major cities such as Detroit, Los Angelos, Chicago, and, of course, New York have gotten their spotlight in the rap game. Music-wise, all Baltimore had in the last 20 years was King Los, Dru Hill, and the faces of Baltimore Club Mix. Little ole’ Baltimore, had yet to get it’s chance to shine until the summer of 2014.
