The holiday season is officially upon us. As we spend this time with our family and loved ones, it is a time to reflect on the year 2017 has been. Whether good or bad, if you’re reading this, you’ve made it this far – and that’s a blessing in itself. With that being said, I asked 13 artists what they have to be thankful for this year as we take time to reflect.
“2017 was a year of mental growth for me. I set goals that seemed impossible to me a year ago and only when I truly believed there were no boundaries, I met my goals. My life changed, but my friends are still the same. I ended up with the girl I wanted since I was 16. Millionaires started inviting me to secret parties and treating me as an equal. My network expanded. Taylor Avenue is still boomin’, I’m still hungry, and my team hasn’t lost any love for the game. I’m thankful for all the above.”
“I’m truly thankful for my crew, but Benjamin Banger to be more exact. Most of the behind-the-scenes moves that Startier thrives from is his doing. Not only is he the most underrated (and most skilled) producer in the city, he’s the engine that drives Finago Park.”
“2017 was definitely one of the most influential years of my life. Definitely a stepping stone, as well as a turning point for a girl looking for ‘direction.’ This year I have so much to be thankful for, starting with music.
Music is what keeps me going. Certain songs mean so much to me because they have gotten me through my darkest times. Baby Kahlo is nothing without a good playlist, so I’m thankful for all the amazing music there is available in this world!
I am thankful for the creatives around me, but specifically for the artist that inspired me to start making music of my own. I am thankful for my support system and music management, for helping spread the music and just being an ear to listen. I am thankful for all the Baby Kahlo fans.
To have just started, it’s so crazy to have strangers know and love you because of your music so early in. I am so thankful for the year 2016. I feel as though 2016 was the worst year of my life, still I optimistically consider that year the year that shaped me mentally, physically, and emotionally and prepared me for anything that may stand in my way on my journey with the music .
I am thankful for Baltimore, there is so much culture here. Both the positive and negative that we experience really builds the most creative and expressive individuals so it is such an honor to be from here. Lastly I am thankful for opportunity and opportunities to come and I look forward to what 2018 has for me!”
“I’m thankful I’m alive. I’m thankful all my friends still alive. I’m thankful for all the shit I’ve realized about myself this year. I’m thankful I’m still motivated to go further with music. I’m thankful for all the shortcomings and dumb shit and shit not going my way cause I learned how to carry it next year. I’m thankful for all the good shit that happened this year cause that shit just feel cool. My homeboys said this year was some bullshit, and it kinda was, but I’m thankful it ain’t completely go our way for real cause I️ learned a lot from shit not going our way. And I’m thankful for my whole team and Lil B this year.”
“2017 has been one hell of a ride. I’m so thankful that I’ve made it this far. This year has taught me so much about life and what’s important. I’m thankful for every single hardship I’ve faced; it’s made me wiser than I’ve ever been. I’m thankful for my gift. This year my voice has connected me to so many people. It’s a goal of mine to inspire and to empower, and for that I know I will be challenged. Each challenge this year has shown me my weaknesses. However, I’m thankful for my weak days where I was forced to step outside of who I’m use to being because it’s made me greater. I’m thankful for the lesson of appreciation. I’m thankful for LIFE and the people who love and support me. Most importantly, I’m thankful that I’ve gotten closer to God because He’s the reason I’m still here to say, thank you. Thank you, and Happy Thanksgiving.”
“I’m thankful that I am nothing like these niggas”
“I’m thankful for everything that has happened to me this year, from losing the single most important person in my life to learning how to swim through it all with no strife. Im thankful for my new found clarity, my eternal sunshine and my spotless mind!”
“I’m thankful for it all. It’s been an eventful year all around, from performing in front of sold-out crowds to connecting with fans directly. Without a major cosign or some bullshit antics, just being Dolla$ignDunn. It’s crazy how real support gravitates towards you when you keeping it a hunnit with the world. For the short amount of time I’ve been doing this, I’m in my own lane real cozy, learning what works for me and what doesn’t. I’m thankful for the fuck ups, mishaps and fumbled plays; they help me maneuver different and tighten up in the future. Thankful for having a solid team in my corner to keep shit copacetic, we support and push each individual to their potential. Shoutout to the homies [UpperClass]. Overall, the experience is what I’m thankful for the most. Not everyone can do this at a consistent level while still producing quality content off the strength of self-taught knowledge. Also thankful for The Demo Tape family for always supporting and pushing the culture forward with dope shit like this! 1Luv – D$D”
“First and foremost, I’m truly thankful to wake up everyday and follow my dreams and aspirations in life. I’m thankful that I have a great team around me, along with my family that truly believes in me. Everyday someone presses play and listens to TwonDon. My message and words are influencing and inspiring someone who, if not me, may change the world one day. My family, my friends, and even down to my enemies – I’m thankful for you all because your the fuel that keeps this engine going and running.”
“With 2017 coming to a close soon, I have a lot to be thankful for. I’m thankful mostly for my team standing by me and supporting my progression thus far. Always pushing me to go beyond what I am as an artist currently. I am also thankful for the position Baltimore is currently at music-wise. So many talented artists on the rise making big power moves and I know it’s many more on the rise. I’m blessed to be in the position that I an in and will continue to elevate. And last, but not least, I am thankful for The Demo Tape for providing a great platform for artists like me to show the world what Baltimore has to offer music-wise. Here’s to more great music to come the rest of the year and beyond.”
“To start, I am forever thankful for the life and time I shared with my late cousin A’Shanti Epps who was killed in a car accident earlier in the year. No one will ever forget the impact you made on their life because you were truly a one-of-a-kind person. To my family, friends (family), and girlfriend, I am thankful for how close we have all grown to each other, this year especially. I know some of us might not talk like we used to, but the love will never change – at least not on this side. I finally realized, in some cases, I gotta do what’s best for me and that doesn’t include everyone. I’m thankful for my growth as a person and how much of it I’m about to share through my music.”
“I am so thankful for the people that God has put around me. These current people in life help me find out who I am through all my trials and tribulations. Everyday, because of them I find out a little bit more about myself in order to become a better man. From friends to family to mentors, I can feel the genuine care in those who want to see me succeed. They provide and create opportunities for me that I’m not sure I would be able to for myself. I am also thankful that God instilled qualities in me that are rare to find in others. I am also glad that I accept these things about myself as well. This is important to me because I don’t think these people wouldn’t be proud to be around me if I wasn’t happy to be the man God has made me to be.”
