If you’re late on the Kamaiyah bandwagon, her critically-acclaimed A Good Night In The Ghetto was widely regarded as one of the best projects of 2016. The Oakland native blends elements of G-Funk into this new-age, west coast sound while still retaining her Bay Area roots.
Earlier this year, she was named to XXL’s 2017 Freshman Class. However, as she battled depression, the loss of her brother to Cancer, and battles with her Interscope label, music has taken a backseat for most of the year. As she wrote on her Instagram, “Creatively I felt trapped with my project being held up due to samples. I lost my way and decided to take initiative by recording and putting together music for my fans all on my own because I felt it was time. Thank you for everyone who has been patient, this is only the beginning.”
Now, the 10-track project is here. Listen to Before I Wake below on SoundCloud as well as other major streaming services.
