Fantasy Football Week 2 Preview

The best matchup plays to set you up for success in Week 2 of the fantasy football season.

There’s a lot we could say about Week 1, but to sum it up, it was extremely exciting. There wasn’t a whole lot of scoring that took place, but it still felt great to have football back. As far as the fantasy side of things is concerned, there were plenty of surprises, from Kenny Golladay to the Jaguars defense. It’s still too early in the season to call anybody a sure thing, but we learned a lot. Here’s some advice to consider when finalizing your lineups for Week 2.

Start Em, Sit Em:

Start: Drew Brees, Saints (vs. NE) – The Patriots defense made Alex Smith look like a star last week. Drew Brees actually is a star and has an opportunity to put up some big numbers.

Sit: Carson Wentz, Eagles (@KC)

Start: Derek Carr, Raiders (vs. NYJ)

Sit: Dak Prescott, Cowboys (at DEN) – I think the Cowboys may need to rely more on the run this week. He fared well against a good Giants secondary at home, but the Broncos at Mile High is another test.

Running Backs

Orlando Ramirez/USA TODAY Sports

Start: Todd Gurley, Rams (vs. WSH) – The Redskins defense is a little shaky and Gurley is a beast. I expect him to have a fine day at their expense.

Sit: Isaiah Crowell, Browns (at BAL)

Start: Melvin Gordon, Chargers (vs. MIA)

Sit: Ameer Abdullah, Lions (@NYG) – Abdullah has been a big disappointment thus far in his career. The Giants have a stout front seven and he doesn’t give us any reason to believe he’ll enjoy success.

Wide Receivers

Start: Michael Thomas, Saints (vs. NE) – Thomas faced a tough Vikings secondary in Week 1, but the Pats’ unit isn’t nearly as fearsome. Start Thomas with confidence.

Sit: Jarvis Landry, Dolphins (@LAC)

Start: Brandin Cooks, Patriots (@NO)

Sit: Emmanuel Sanders, Broncos (vs. DAL) – Sure, Sanders gets a solid amount of targets, but he got all those targets last week and still didn’t have much production to show for it.

Tight Ends

Pro Football Spot

Start: Rob Gronkowski, Patriots (@NO) – Gronk should be one of the most confident starts this week, as he is facing a porous Saints pass defense.

Sit: Hunter Henry, Chargers (vs. MIA)

Start: Jordan Reed, Redskins (@LAR)

Sit: Jason Witten, Cowboys (@DEN) – Witten was targeted plenty in Week 1, but I’m just not sure how much success the Boys will have passing the ball against the Broncos.

Defenses to Stream:

Baltimore Ravens vs. CLE

Houston Texans @CIN

Oakland Raiders vs. NYJ

Bold Sleepers:

WR Chris Hogan, Patriots (@NO) – Did I mention that the Saints secondary isn’t very good? Edelman is out and Amendola is banged up. Hogan has the fresh legs and may be worth FLEX consideration here.

RB Terrance West, Ravens (vs. CLE)

WR DeVante Parker, Dolphins (at LAC)

TE Cameron Brate, Buccaneers (vs. Bears) – Austin Hooper has a big day against the Bears in Week 1. Brate has a chance to enjoy the same success with the attention Tampa Bay’s receivers draw.
