Throwback Thursday: Revisiting N.O.R.E.’s “SuperThug”
Bankin$ takes the lead on this edition of Throwback Thursday and revisits N.O.R.E.'s single, "Superthug,"
N.O.R.E.’s first album, the self titled classic, N.O.R.E. recently became one of my favorite albums to drop back in ’98. The features were phenomenal and the album had a number of quotable bars. While N.O.R.E. is a classic album, I’m here to remind y’all about his iconic single “Superthug.” I feel like “Superthug” is one of the first of many “turn up” songs from that time period.
I’m an avid podcast listener and N.O.R.E. delivered his presence on Taxstone’s podcast last year around Thanksgiving and he spoke on many things, but “Superthug” was one of the most important. After hearing this podcast, I had to revisit the song and it brought back a lot of memories for me. I remember being the backseat of my mom’s car hearing this and repeating the hook (What, What, What, What!). After listening to “Superthug” about ten times, I often imagined how it was in the club when that record dropped. I know one thing for sure, the energy was crazy! Back to the interview, N.O.R.E. also payed homage to one of the greatest producers to have grace the rap game, Pharrell. N.O.R.E. also tells some pretty funny stories about meeting him check it out: #FREETAXSTONE
“We light a candle, run laps around the English Channel Neptunes, I got a cocker spaniel.”
N.O.R.E. and Pharrell are like a match made in hip hop-heaven. They have great collaborations together; every time they link up its a masterpiece. “Superthug” was their first collaboration – an amazing single that still bangs to this day. Pharrell gave us a sound that was never heard before and after this track, his buzz started to heat even more. “Superthug” was the undoubtedly hottest single in the country. Also, the video was shot in the middle of the desert with camels, they obviously don’t do it like this anymore! This was considered the golden era of hip-hop, I cant wait to give y’all more heat in the upcoming weeks!
