Building the Perfect 2017 BET Awards Lineup

Here's a list of names who have earned the right to perform at the 2017 BET Awards.

Year after year, black music entertainment fans look forward to the special performances at the BET Awards. The 2017 edition of the awards show takes place tonight and a number of hip-hop and R&B’s biggest names will be gracing the stage. However, sometimes the BET Awards don’t always get it right in regards to who actually should be performing. So, here’s the perfect 2017 BET Awards lineup based on the past year in music.

Migos

This first one is a no-brainer. Their album, Culture, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. The project’s lead single, “Bad and Boujee” was also No. 1 on the charts. Migos is one of the hottest acts out and have a lengthy track record of producing hit records. If I’m in attendance at this year’s BET Awards, Migos is a must-have on the lineup because they can effortlessly grab the attention of the crowd.

Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars is simply that dude. He is the true definition of a performers. You can notice the influence of legends like Michael Jackson when Bruno performs, but it’s with his own added flavor. With two hits in the past year in “That’s What I Like” and “24K Magic,” he is bound to put on a show for the people. Bruno Mars has so much soul and that’s what R&B is all about.

French Montana & Swae Lee

Their collaboration, “Unforgettable,” has been on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 10 straight week and even peaked at No. 17 on that list. French Montana just continues to churn out hits and this is one of his biggest yet, as he recruited the Rae Sremmurd standout to help make this song a mainstream wonder.

Kehlani

I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m tired of people overhyping Beyonce performances. She’s a great artist and performer, but it’s time for something new. Kehlani is a fresh face and a beautiful one at that. She could perform songs like “Distraction” and her hit single, “CRZY,” which went certified gold. Kehlani is fun and would own the BET stage if given the opportunity.

DJ Khaled & Friends

People make fun of DJ Khaled and question what he actually does, but it’s pretty clear that he’s one of the most well-respected names in the industry. There isn’t anyone else who can get together the big names on his songs and at the rate he does it. There is a laundry list of hits under his name, most recently, “I’m The One,” featuring Chance the Rapper, Justin Beiber and Quavo.

Drake

Drake is another name that goes without saying. In terms of rappers, he is the top dog — not necessarily in lyricism, but in the total package. His discography is ridiculous and it only continues to grow. With songs like “Fake Love,” “Teenage Fever,” and “Passionfruit,” I’m sure he could find something to perform. Not to mention, Drake has endless classics in his repertoire.

Chance the Rapper

There is not another artist like Chance the Rapper in the game right now. His energy is unrivaled and he’s not a bad rapper either. Call him overrated if you want, he always comes to show out when he takes the stage and the BET Awards would be nothing for him to shut down. Chance should be a lock to perform.

Gucci Mane

Guwop is back! It’s only right that they give him a chance to rock the BET stage. Gucci is on one hell of a run right now, with tracks like “Both,” but it would be even more exciting if he decided to bless up with some classics. Imagine Gucci performing “I Think I Love Her,” “Wasted” and “On Deck” at the BET Awards. That would be legendary.

Young M.A

In my opinion, Young M.A. has fallen off, but there is no denying the impact of her smash hit, “OOOUUU.” When that beat drops, a crowd anywhere is going to go bananas. It would be a sight to see her take the stage, even if it’s just for one song.

Future

It would be a travesty for Future to not perform at the BET Awards this year. Future is not a name you think of when talking about true rappers, but he continues to reinvent the wheel and put out thoroughly enjoyable music. He has a run of four straight No. 1 albums and doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon. Future could perform any of his songs and it would be lit.

Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar is one of the hottest names in hip-hop and his style is different from every other artist on this list.  “DNA” and “HUMBLE” are two big-time hits and given his track record of performances, what he has in store would most likely be a good one.

New Edition

New Edition is getting honored at this year’s show with the Lifetime Achievement Award and with the buzz surrounding the BET biopic, it’s only right that they grace the stage. If only they all could get their act together for one night only for this to go without a hitch.

Kodak Black

This performance wouldn’t happen for obvious reasons, but it doesn’t hurt to dream. Kodak Black is so controversial, yet he’s so fun to watch. There are a number of songs he could perform at the show, including “Tunnel Vision” and “There He Go.” His energy alone would make for a great show.

SZA

Again, the BET Awards is the perfect platform to showcase some up-and-coming talent that has what a takes to be on the big stage. SZA belongs in that category. She has several standout tracks, including “Drew Barrymore,” “Doves in the Wind” and “Love Galore.” This would be a semi-big step for her career.

Lil Uzi Vert

Some people like Lil Uzi Vert, some don’t. But, the fact of the matter is that he’s one of the most energetic performers in hip-hop today. He has a different style of music than that of older hip hop heads, but Uzi has hits and it would make for one of the most hype performances of the evening.

2 Chainz

2 Chainz is a legend, simple and plain. He’s been at the top of his game for quite some time now and you shouldn’t expect him to fall off in the near future. “Good Drank,” “It’s A Vibe” and “Big Amount” are all viable options for Tity Boi to perform on the BET stage.

Big Sean

Big Sean is still one of the most recognizable names in the rap game. His latest album, I Decided. has several solid singles, but the best song for him to perform might be “Bigger Than Me,” a motivational track which, with the help of a choir, could be very powerful.

The Weeknd

The Weeknd is arguably the best performer of this entire bunch and he has hits for days. One of the best all-around artists the music industry has to offer, this performance is guaranteed to be one of the best of the night. The Weeknd is money.
