On April 13, Baltimoreans far and wide celebrated the life and legacy of rapper Lor Scoota. On his 24th birthday, his posthumous mixtape Live From the A was released, hosted by DJ Flow.
Just last summer, in June of 2016, he was killed leaving a charity basketball event to stop the violence in his hometown. 2016 would end as the city’s second deadliest year on record, as Scoota was one of the 318 homicides in Baltimore.
In an article written by the Baltimore Sun, that math totaled out to one in every 2,000 people in Baltimore lost to violence last year. As reporter Kevin Rector stated in his article, Baltimore’s homicide rate is down from 2015 — but up over every other year on record, that not only makes Baltimore one of the deadliest cities in America, but in the world.
May Scoota’s legacy live on through his music, and his message to create a more peaceful city of Baltimore continue to resonate with his last call to action being just that.
