In My Bag | 3.1.17
Why Phil Jackson is trash and plenty more mailbag questions.
I know y’all missed me last week, but I’m back now. There’s a lot going on in sports right now. The NBA trade deadline just passed. Two great NFL running backs are entering free agency. March Madness is almost upon us. You got questions, I got answers. Let’s get that bag.
Better free agent signing — Adrian Peterson or Jamaal Charles?
Ahhhh! This is a tough call. You’re taking a risk by picking up either player, as they each have had their fair share of injury problems over the past few years. But, if that puts them on a level playing field, I’m signing Jamaal Charles right now. They’re right around the same age, but Charles is a more versatile back that Peterson is. He’s electric when he gets the ball in his hands. I think the punishing style of running Peterson has exhibited over the years is finally starting to catch up to him and his durability concerns me.
Are the Cavs the favorites with Deron Williams and Andrew Bogut?
They were the favorites in the East before the moves and they still are. As far as the rest the league is concerned, it comes down to Cleveland and the Golden State Warriors. I have to give the edge to the Cavs right now, because the front office went out and addressed all of their needs. D-Will is the playmaker head coach LeBron James wanted and Bogut is the rim protector that they needed. So, it wouldn’t be wrong to consider either team the favorite at this point in the season, but from top to bottom, I’d be more confident in Cleveland.
Thoughts on Jameis Winston controversy?
Jameis Winston is one of the brightest young players in the NFL in terms of skill. But, when it comes to actual common sense, the same can’t be said. I’m sorry, but it’s time to stop making excuses for this type of immature behavior. I know he’s 23 years old, but so am I and I know better than to say ladies are supposed to be “silent, polite, gentle.” I’m sure he didn’t mean it like that, but still. It’s time for him to grow up. No more insensitive comments. No more crab legs. With the spotlight on him, he can’t afford to drop the ball like this again.
Which college basketball team would you not want to play in the NCAA Tournament?
This would probably be the moment you expect me to go off the grid and pick a team other than the one ranked No. 1 in the country, but I just can’t bring myself to do it. I love Villanova. I love UCLA. But they all have flaws that Kansas simply doesn’t have. They have pretty much been dominant in college basketball’s toughest conference. Although they’ve been battling injuries, the Jayhawks have persevered and just keep plugging away on their way to the overall 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament. Not to mention, they have arguably the best player in college basketball right now in Frank Mason III.
What is Phil Jackson doing?
Your guess is just as good as mine. I think the guy has lost his mind to be honest. This can’t be the same Phil Jackson that won championships with the Bulls and Lakers. Nope, not the Zen Master. This season has been a complete disaster for the New York Knicks. After bringing in Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah and Courtney Lee, to combine with a great player like Carmelo Anthony, this team was supposed to contend for the playoffs in the East at the very least. But, if we’re being real, they’re one of the laughing stocks of the entire NBA. Derek Fisher and Jeff Hornacek were bad choices for head coach. Charles Oakley is being mistreated. And they just cut Brandon Jennings for a D-League prospect. So all is well in the Big City.
