Five Reasons Why It’s Unfair to Discredit Remy Ma Because of Numbers

Remy might not have the album sales Nicki does, but album sales don't make you the queen.

Remy Ma has been itching for a reason to sound off, and Nicki Minaj finally gave her a reason to do so. Their feud dates back to 2007, before Remy was incarcerated, when Nicki released her “Dirty Money” freestyle record on her Playtime Is Over mixtape. She starts the freestyle off by saying “Tell that bitch with the crown to run it like Chris Brown/she won three rounds, I’ma need a hundred thou/like ‘Chinatown’ — bitches better bow down/oh you ain’t know, betcha bitches know now/fuck I got a gun — let her know that I’m the one.”

After Gucci Mane released “Make Love“ featuring Nicki Minaj, fans wondered who Minaj was referring to when she rapped, “Oh you the qu-e-e-the queen of this here?/ One platinum plaque, album flopped.” Low and behold, Minaj was referring to Remy Ma.

Some agreed with Nicki, citing that album sales in addition to spectacular marketing and determination made Nicki the undisputed Queen of Hip-Hop, while others shook their heads – with valid reason of course. The reason being that people who claim they know music were counting Remy out, when she has indeed been IN all along. Thus, when she released “ ShETHER,” a play on an original diss record from Nas to Jay-Z, the world stopped. One, because nobody would’ve ever thought that Remy would respond to the same person that she originally wanted to link up and rule the world of hip hop with in the fashion that she did.

The issue that I had was that oddly, a lot of people on and after Saturday night, who claimed they knew music, assumed that Nicki was indeed, the best to ever do it with the logic being that album sales and marketability automatically deemed her as being credible and successful. What they clearly forgot was that Nicki owes Remy a Mother’s Day card this year. So I took it upon myself to help y’all understand the relevance and and importance of Remy Ma as an artist.. Thus, here are five reasons why Remy Ma is much more credible and successful than you think:

1 – She is an award-winning musician

She isn’t a Keyshia Cole with the plethora of jokes she’s received over the years. This means, she gets invited to the awards ceremonies and wins. What most people forget is that she has two Vibe awards, two Source awards, a BET award for Best Female Hip Hop Artist and is GRAMMY nominated.

2 – She was the first lady of one of the biggest music conglomerates of the early 2000’s

Otherwise known as The ” Terror Squad,” Remy was the leading lady of the crew and their run of the early 2000’s. It was the home of Fat Joe, the late Big Pun and even DJ Khaled. They as a group created albums that have charted on the billboard top 100, even placing them with having two top ten rap albums. That’s just not by luck.

3 – As a solo artist, she has moved more than 100,000 units of her debut album.

Being a female rap artist, it’s hard to get people to listen to you, let alone even buy your album. There’s some artists who aren’t pushing that much in sales at all. Remy even has over 4 million in monthly streams on Spotify, so it’s hard to say she’s irrelevant based on sales and listens just because she isn’t doing the numbers Nicki is. Plus, Remy was featured in a platinum single that got nominated for a GRAMMY last year in “All The Way Up,” so somebody is listening.

4 – She writes her own lyrics.

No ghostwriter needed. I’ve been listening to Remy for years, and one thing I can assure you of is that her name is listed in the credits for each track on her albums and mixtapes. There aren’t five people in a room all figuring out the next line to finish the 16.

5 – There aren’t too many artists who are passionate and true to their craft as much as she is, as well as being true to herself.

Remy is the same person we met 13 years ago as she is now. Even while watching Love & Hip Hop, it`s apparent that Remy is a “ what you see is what you get” kind of woman. She does not have to create multiple personalities like Nicki does. In addition to that, Remy stays in one lane. Nicki had a clothing line that`s now on clearance because it`s being discontinued.
